Originals from Cathy Veale!

Cathy Veale’s serene coastal watercolours have won her a significant following. We sell her pictures regularly as framed prints, but the meticulous and time-consuming nature of her work means that she is not prolific, so originals are not very often available.
However, Cathy has just brought us several originals, which are now on the wall of the gallery! It is a rare chance to see a set of her original paintings in one place – and to acquire one, if you are are so inclined!

New paintings from Philip Winstone

Just in: a set of rather nice new paintings by Philip Winstone – evocative, hard-to-pin-down images in in his characteristic restrained palette. See Artists’ Work in the Gallery 2 https://gallerypoundbury.co.uk/current-exhibition/

On the wall now alongside some seriously good Dorset landscapes  by Colin Willey, a series of large mixed-media canvases by Debra Sweeney and much more, of course…

Summertime!

We have probably never packed so many pictures into the gallery!
Our Summer Exhibition 2023 includes work from John Boyd, Debra Sweeney, Lucy Erskine, Rob Adams, Rebecca Guyett, Sue Fawthrop, Sarah Jack and Caroline Tucker. This is just one corner of the room…
If you have the chance, do stop by and have a look!

PS: Our Summer Exhibition 2023 starts on Saturday, July 1, with artists including John Boyd, Debra Sweeney, Lucy Erskine, Rebecca Guyett and Rob Adams.. There will be plenty to look at!

What a day at Poundbury!

What an astonishing day at Poundbury on Saturday at the ‘Art in the Park’ event! The sun shone all day, and with around 80 artists, amateur and professional, spread out all around the Great Field, it wasn’t easy to catch up with them all, let alone come to agreement about who would get the vote when it came to the prizes…

Major congratulations to Art in Poundbury for coming up with the idea and making it happen! The overall prize (£250 from Gallery On The Square) went to James Meiklejohn, seen here with his delighted daughter and judges Binny Mathews, Finn Campbell-Notman and David Murdock.

A remarkable event…

In the Landscape: Two Dorset Painters

Starting in the Gallery on May 20: A breath (well, more than a breath) of fresh air!
A lively exhibition of new pictures from Rob Adams and Sue Fawthrop: two Dorset painters dedicated to the ‘plein air’ approach to painting – that is, working outside in the landscape, rather than in the studio.
See The Gallery: Exhibition Schedule.
Also in the Gallery: we are just about to unpack a new delivery of top-notch work from master glass blower Bob Crooks! That should be on view by Saturday (May 6).
Meanwhile, the shop is packed with new-season Summer clothing from all our favourite brands: Pomodoro, Adini and Soya Concept among them.
Do call in if you are anywhere near!

What’s on in the Gallery 2023

Plenty of interesting exhibitions coming up in the gallery this year, including what should be an exciting landscape show by Dorset-based ‘plein air’ painters Rob Adams and Sue Fawthrop (starts May 20) and a solo exhibition by gallery favourite Colin Willey later in the year.

We are also currently finalising our list of artists for this year’s Summer Show. More details in a while. We are looking forward to that already!

First off, though, we have a fascinating new exhibition showcasing new work by Teresa Lawton, an established artist whose work has been widely exhibited – but not previously at Gallery On The Square! That begins on March 25. A bit more detail on the website here at https://gallerypoundbury.co.uk/exhibitions/

Also due in shortly at the gallery: a new consignment of superb studio glass from master glass blower Bob Crooks.

Meanwhile, in the shop, we’re looking to spring and summer, with new fashion lines arriving all the time from quality brands including Pomodoro, Cream and Marble.

We are also hoping for some slightly more cheerful weather – but that is something over which we have no control…

Big paintings by Philip Winstone

Starting on Saturday February 4: an exhibition of big new paintings by Philip Winstone, who has become a gallery favourite since we started to show his work back on 2016. It is the first time we have been able to assemble a whole group of larger pictures by Philip, and we are looking forward to it immensely!

If you are particularly keen to take an early look at the paintings, you are welcome to call in at the gallery in the late afternoon of Friday February 3, when we will be putting the finishing touches to the exhibition. (We will be closing at 6pm.)

On the Saturday (February 4) Philip will be in the gallery from 11.30am to 1.30pm. If you would like to say hello and talk to him about his work, please do! We would be grateful if you would e-mail us beforehand ( art@gallerypoundbury.co.uk ) to let us know, so that we can make sure there is a glass of wine for you, if you feel like one. We hope we may see you!

Animal Magic

In our first solo exhibition of the year we showcase the intriguing paintings of Bridget Syms, an artist who grew up in Dorset but now lives and works in west Cornwall. Her work finely-executed work extends from fairly straightforward animal portraits to entirely images formed from dreams or flights of fancy.

From the time she could hold a crayon, drawing and animals was Bridget Syms’s obsession, and her work is driven, she says by a fascination for animals near and far, “from the motorway crows and the owls that fleetingly hover on our peripheral vision to the ones I live alongside.”

Some of the more fanciful images derive, she says, “from things I may have read or even dreamed. But once I get an image in my mind I just have to get it down on paper.”

The exhibition starts on October 1 and runs to November 6. https://gallerypoundbury.co.uk/current-exhibition-page-2/

Also new in the gallery: new paintings by Sarah Jack as well as impressive ceramics from Katalin Szallas and Gilly Whittington. Plus a fresh batch of luminous glass from master glass blower Bob Crooks…

Farewell to Brewery Square…

After three happy years at our second shop in Brewery Square, we have decided to re-focus our efforts and concentrate on our main shop in at Poundbury, which has remained very much our centre of activity.
The shop at Brewery Square is now closed.
It was a difficult decision to make, but we felt we needed to make our life slightly more straightforward, so that we have a chance to see a bit more of our family!
Any gift vouchers or credit notes issued at Brewery Square will of course be valid at Poundbury.

Best wishes,
David and Stephanie
