Paintings by John Boyd
John Boyd, who has been a professional artist for more than 25 years, has his studio in Bridport.
His inspiration is rooted in the diversity of the Dorset coastline, and his love of the natural world and of the landscape is evident in the authenticity of his work. He has built a substantial reputation for his atmospheric style, and ability to convey a distinctive sense of place or mood.
Paintings by Debra Sweeney
Debra Sweeney, who graduated from Ravensbourne College of Art, has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. Her mixed-media work draws on the landscape and the human figure, seeking to reveal the form underlying the nostalgic or the familiar.
Based in Salisbury, she also works from a studio on Portland, where the island and neighbouring coast provide the kernel for a process of drawing and collage in which she creates sweeping, linear landscapes.
Paint, ink and collage are central to Debra’s unique technique. Collage, used in block form, is assembled as shadow to describe the form and emphasise the drawn line.
Paintings by Sue Fawthrop
Sue Fawthrop is a Dorset artist devoted to the ‘plein air’ approach to painting – working outside in front of the subject.
She says: “I’ve drawn and painted most of my life, working in all sorts of ways, before becoming attached to painting out of doors, directly from the landscape.
“Plein-air painting is a marvellous thing to do. Trying to capture an elusive ray of light as it hits a particularly bright field in the distance, while hanging on to your hat and easel in a high wind, is exciting. You can’t work in a fussy way if the brush is trying to bounce on the surface, and the struggle against the elements comes through in the energy of the piece.
“My subjects are landscape, coast and countryside, mainly of Dorset. I live in a small rural community surrounded by rolling hills and woodland, and there’s a painting round every corner.”
Paintings by Roger Seddon
Roger Seddon, an established painter of landscapes and coastal scenes, was tutored initially to work in the traditional manner of 19th and 20th century English landscape painters, and the underlying influences of Turner, Edward Seago and Frederick Cuming can be found in much of his work.
Moody and atmospheric, capturing time and place, they are characterised by their tonal qualities, subtle optical effects and energetic brushstrokes.
Throughout the year he can be found working outdoors on location, making sketches and colour drawings which provide the basis for studio paintings in oil, on canvas, board or panel.
Linocuts by Bridget Syms
Printmaker Bridget Syms works from a studio on the far west coast of Cornwall. Her images celebrate animal life of all kinds, from the crow and the curlew to the octopus and the whale.
