Simon is back! For one weekend…

Seascape specialist Simon Read was one of our first regular exhibitors when we opened seven and a half years ago, responsible for some of our earliest sales of pictures in the gallery. Then he moved to live in Pembrokeshire…

We will shortly be welcoming him back – for one weekend – and we are looking forward to catching up with him. If you would like to look at his recent paintings and talk to Simon about his work (and perhaps even take home one of his pictures) he will be in the gallery on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 8, 9 and 10. We are looking forward to it…

Open For Art: who’s in the gallery

Open For Art 2019 starts soon, providing a widespread showcase for the work of artists across the whole of South Dorset, from Weymouth and Portland to Dorchester, Abbotsbury and all around.

At Gallery On The Square we are delighted to be be showing the paintings and prints of Angela Goodman and Rebecca Guyett. Angela’s work may be familiar to regulars at the gallery: she is one of the artists whose work we have exhibited regularly since we opened the gallery more than seven years ago. Rebecca is a newcomer to Gallery On The Square whose paintings and prints we are looking forward to hanging for the first time.

Open For Art starts on the 18th of May and runs to the 2nd of June. Our exhibition actually starts on Saturday May the 11th. We are open seven days a week (a shorter day on Sunday, from 10am to 4pm)…

Cool paintings, hot ceramics

Starting on Saturday March 23 in the gallery: new paintings from Philip Winstone and ceramics from Jerry and Catherine Broadway of Elm House Studio.

Philip has been a regular exhibitor at Gallery On The Square since we first showed his work in 2016. His distinctive form of semi-abstraction, inspired by the coast, is characterised by a cool, subtle palette and focus on texture.

The artists will be in the gallery between around 1pm and 3pm if you would like to say hello and talk to them about their work.

We’re expecting some of the pots to be arriving on Saturday morning hot out of the kiln! A technical malfunction prevented them from being fired earlier in the week…

What a result! £726.27 for cancer care

Two charity coffee mornings which we held at Poundbury and at Brewery Square raised even more than we had hoped for on behalf of the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust, which supports cancer care at Dorset County Hospital.

A huge thank-you to everyone who contributed to that very gratifying figure. The picture shows Paul Ryan, chairman of the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust, drawing our raffle on behalf of the charity. The prize, a £120 bag by Owen Barry, went to  Gina Orgel from Dorchester.

And everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the occasion! Perhaps we should do it again some time…

Saved from the flames: John Boyd’s pictures for the Summer Show

Saved: new pictures by John Boyd

The blaze which ripped through St Michael’s Studios at Bridport last week came two days before painter John Boyd was due to deliver his pictures for our 2018 summer show.

John, who lives at Bridport, was one of a number of artists with a workplace at St Michael’s. The fire devastated the old building, and some studios were completely destroyed.

To his relief he was able to retrieve the majority of his most recent paintings and deliver them on time.

He said: “I actually saw the fire as it caught hold. On Saturday, the afternoon of the fire, I was walking in the fields beyond the building. I glanced back and saw plumes of smoke rising.

“I thought, I do hope that’s not St Michael’s… I walked back to where I could see better and my heart sank. After that the fire just got worse.

“So I was amazed to find that in the end I was able to retrieve most of my work. It turned out that the part of the building my studio was in was not as badly affected as some others.

“Obviously it’s bad enough having lost my studio as well as some of my equipment and a few of my paintings, but at least I have been able to save most of the new pictures I have been working on for the last six months or so.

“I have been lucky in a way, because other artists have come out of it worse, losing all their work as well as their working base. It’s terrible.

“In terms of setting up a studio it’s start-again time for me; I’m just hoping for the best at the moment.”

In the Summer Exhibition at Gallery On The Square, which runs until August 29, John Boyd is joined by Colin Willey, Jan Walker, Rob Adams, Judy Tate and Philip Winstone.

PS: Like most of the artists who were based at the St Michael’s Studios, John is now urgently looking for a new space in which to work, or at least a temporary storage facility. If anyone is able to help, he can be contacted on 07784 942979.

What a show!

Great start on Friday evening to our exhibition which runs during Dorset Art Weeks: new paintings by one of our favourite artists, Jan Walker, and brilliant ceramics by her husband David.

Three pictures and several pots sold on the night, but plenty of marvellous ones still here, of course!  The exhibition runs until June 29.
