We’ve gone to town

We have been so busy getting our new shop going that we haven’t had time to tell anybody about it!

We decided we needed to be in the town centre, and now we are – at Antelope Walk in the middle of Dorchester. You’ll find all our favourite brands, including India Jane, Bob Crooks glass, Jo Downs, Yoshi, Arran Aromatics, Alice Hannah accessories and lots of lovely gifts. Plus, of course, Vintage Paint for furniture from Grand Illusions.

We’re open at Antelope Walk every day except Sunday; hope you are able to call in!

All the way from LA… Claire Fordham

There’s an event with a difference at Gallery On The Square on September 25: a rare chance to catch up with writer Claire Fordham.

Claire Fordham

Claire, a former journalist from Dorset, is the sister of renowned singer-songwriter Julia Fordham. After Julia found international fame and made her home in Los Angeles, Claire flew over to join her, and her encounters in the surreal world of celebrity culture led to her first book, titled ‘Plus One: A Year in the Life of a Hollywood Nobody’.

It was enthusiastically received – not least by best-selling author Augusten Burroughs, who said: “Claire Fordham is the funniest writer on the planet. She is the real-life Bridget Jones, only funnier and more beautiful.”

Sixteen years after she first flew to LA, Claire is still there, but she will be back in England briefly this month to promote her latest book, ‘Life Lessons for Mia Rose: An Irreverent Guide to Living and Loving Well’.

In it, Claire shares her experiences and her own lessons learned with humour and honesty. It has been described as a must-read for any mother or grandmother.

Claire said: “I was inspired to write the book after the birth of my granddaughter, Mia Rose. She is four now, and I will give it to her on her 16th birthday. I wanted to share some of the things I have learned, and for her to know me.”

At 6.30pm on the evening of Friday September 25 at Gallery On The Square, Poundbury, Claire Fordham will be reading from her new book and signing copies. If you would like to come along, e-mail art@gallerypoundbury.co.uk

Penultimate show of the year…

Rob Adams summer 2015 for web

Rob Adams 400 488Starting on in the Gallery on Friday September 11: our penultimate exhibition of the year: new paintings by Rob Adams and ceramics from Elm House Studio.

Rob Adams is a member of the Wapping Group of Artists and a dedicated outdoor painter whose work has won an enthusiastic following in London galleries. He has exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Watercolour Society.

We first showed his Dorset landscapes in our Summer Show last year, and immediately invited him back for a solo exhibition in 2015.

Alongside Rob’s new oils and watercolours we are also showing ceramics by the talented Jerry and Catherine Broadway, whose Elm House studio is in North Dorset.

The private view is on the evening of Thursday September 10 at 6.30pm. If you would like to join us for a first look at the show, just e-mail us at art@gallerypoundbury.co.uk

It’s Summer Show time in the Gallery – and this must be our best exhibition yet.

Our main featured artists are Dorset landscape painters Colin Willey and Lynda Appleby, but we also have some terrific pictures by Ben Spurling, Jenny Shaw-Browne, Angela Goodman and Caz Scott.

The exhibition is on until September 7, but please don’t leave it too long to have a good look round!

We’re open every day except Sunday.

A Glimpse of Sea by Angela Goodman (acrylic on canvas)

One of the highlights of the Gallery schedule last year was Angela Goodman’s exhibition, so we are delighted to welcome Angela back with a collection of new paintings centred on Dorset’s cliffs and coastal landscape.

Down to the Sea: New Paintings by Angela Goodman starts in the gallery on May 8 and runs until June 22.

We think you’ll find it well worth a visit!

Here’s a side of Simon Read you may not be aware of!
Simon is well known for his atmospheric seascapes, but another long-term preoccupation has been the abstract canvases he can often be found quietly working away on.
He doesn’t show them often, though, so there’s a novel aspect to our new exhibition of Simon’s paintings: we have been able to hang a number of the abstract pictures alongside his seascapes and landscapes.
The exhibition starts on Saturday February 28.

It’s Spring! And It’s all happening

Spring is nearly here, so we have spring-cleaned the website and this is our first new post!

We have new stock arriving daily in the shops and it’s all change in the Gallery with a some brilliant new exhibitions planned for the year  (find the schedule for the year by going to Gallery here on the website). We have welcomed a new cafe manager, Sarah, who brings a real wealth of experience. She takes over from our lovely Georgie who is heading off to develop a career in events management. We wish her well.

Our new shop, Gallery Home is going from strength to strength (you’ll find it easily if you simply walk south across the green towards the Buttermarket), and it enables us to do more in the way of furniture and lighting. We are working with some stylish suppliers and have lots of catalogues for you to browse for new ideas and to order from.

And of course we are official stockists of  Vintage Paint from Grand Illusions – the best furniture paint there is, in our opinion, and the people who try it seem to agree with us!
